The Artistic Director and founder of Tabula Rasa Dance Theater, Felipe Escalante, will be sharing parts of his upcoming work "Animus Necandi" and engaing in conversation with the audience. Escalante believes that choreography must elicit powerful and sometimes difficult emotional responses. Our work motivates audiences to examine their own values.

Animus Necandi

In jurisprudence, animus necandi refers to the intent to cause death.

“Animus Necandi” explores the pain of families who have lost relatives condemned to the death penalty. It also examines the complex moral issue of capital punishment, which continues as a legal practice in more than 55 countries and 27 states in the US.

The Supreme Court proclaimed that the state could kill so long as it used methods that did not impose something more than the mere extinguishment of life. This dance theater piece seeks to question how is it that life can be merely extinguished.

It does not matter if you are in favor or against it. In a polarized society we believe that art can invite a dialogue by asking us to revisit our own assumptions and beliefs.
