Event description

Description

An accelerated program designed to help founders & teams create a focused business plan in a short time frame that is supported by customer feedback, a financial model and clear messaging. The five classes build on each other – so attendance at all is preferred.

Oct 4th Introduction to "Lean Canvas"* Instead of spending months trying to write a 40-page business plan that will probably be obsolete by the time it’s finished, build a one-page framework that can be modified as you obtain new learnings and information for the key elements of your business. This enables you to focus on what’s important and minimize clutter. A key area is “Minimum Viable Product” (MVP) – what is the most basic version of your product or service that can be presented to potential customers or industry experts to get real time market feedback – which leads to the next class.

Oct 11th Market & Customer Validation Before proceeding with product development, you want to make sure that you have clearly identified your target customer, and that you’ve quantified the size of the market – and how much market share you need to be profitable. The other half of the equation is how many of those customers exist – you want to make sure the market opportunity is big enough that you don’t need to capture an unreasonably large share of the market. Once you’ve combined your target market definition and supported it by understanding your market size and how much you’ll need to be successful, it’s time to talk to customers. Using some version of MVP, you’ll use a structured “interview” process to get feedback from both customers and industry experts – and do it before you invest significant time and money in product development.

Oct 18th NO CLASS Use this week’s time to meet with potential customers and industry experts to get feedback on your idea that will help you modify and refine your concept as needed – and update your Lean Canvas.

Oct 25th Financial Model How much will a customer pay for your product? How much does it cost to make your product? How much does it cost to operate your company – with staff, rent, supplies, utilities and marketing? How many new customers will you get each month? You may not know the answers to all of the questions, but you want to do some research to create a starting point for your key assumptions that ultimately will determine the profitability of your company. Doing this will also let you set realistic sales targets for your business based on customer validation and market size – which lets you do a reality check on your goals. This lets you visualize what it will take to earn a profit and provides you with a financial road map.

Nov 1st Telling Your Story You’re incredibly excited about your product and your company – but how can you get other people excited by telling a compelling story that gets their attention and makes them care? Depending on the stage of your company, you may be trying to raise capital from potential investors, sell your product to new customers, or recruit those critical initial team members, it’s essential that you be able to communicate effectively. This class will review different settings, and how to craft and deliver your message to stand out from the competition.

Nov 8th Preparing For Lauch Based on the work you did in the week prior, you’ll have a chance to present to the class – as an investor pitch, a customer presentation or a recruiting conversation.

The investment for the 5-class series is $200 per company. Up to three people from each company can attend.

There will be 6-8 hours of homework each week.

The focus and framework offered through this class – and the interaction with other founders and aspiring entrepreneurs – can help you make fast progress on a business idea that you’ve been considering or help you refine an existing business that isn’t going in the direction you want.
