Description: The case of Ibrahim, a 10 year old Somali refugee boy and his two siblings are passengers in a school bus accident (bridge collapse) while traveling on a summer camp-related trip will be used to explore issues related to refugee trauma, culture and trauma and post traumatic stress reactions.

This session uses the National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s Core Curriculum in Child and Adolescent Trauma©. The Core Curriculum enhances practitioner knowledge in three domains, that include core conceptual and theoretical understanding, core components of trauma-focused interventions and core therapeutic skills.

Objectives:

1. Apply the 12 Core Concepts for Understaing Child Traumatic Stress (NCTSN, 2012) as conceptual lenses to frame information and guide critical reasoning about a case study.

2. Identify ecological factors hypothesized to influence children’s traumatic experiences and contribute to their post-traumatic adjustment.

3. Incorporate relevant ecological factors into a case conceptualization, and use that framework to evaluate the hypothesized contributions of different case factors and guide case-related reasoning.

4. Identify how pre-existing vulnerabilities and trauma history contribute to current trauma-related symptoms.

5. Identify protective and promotive factors in the environment which may contribute to posttrauma recovery.

Discuss the potential impacts of posttraumatic stress reaction on onoing development, especially ways in which they may restrict engagement in healthy age-appropriate activites.
