About this event

Research has now proven what dance/movement therapists (and many traditional healers) have known to be true: trauma lives in the body. This workshop will explore the intersectionality of dance/movement therapy (DMT) practices and the core concepts of trauma informed care (TIC). Addressing key terminology and research in the fields of mind-body, somatic psychotherapy, neurobiology, neuropsychology, and diversity-equity-inclusion work, this workshop will promote client-centered care for working with diverse populations in community mental health. In addition, Laban-Bartenieff Movement Studies will be presented as a tool for observation and intervention in TIC and client-centered work. Experiential opportunities, using DMT and somatic techniques, will be facilitated to create an interactive experience for practical applications. The workshop will conclude with a discussion regarding best practices in the field of trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will enhance their understanding of trauma informed care with diverse populations, through dance/movement therapy approaches to healing and resilience.
  2. Attendees will increase self/other body awareness, by applying Laban-Bartenieff Movement Studies Effort-Shape concepts and dance/movement therapy techniques.
  3. Attendees will be able to define terminology relevant to DMT and trauma work, including: body-based transference and countertransference, window of tolerance, ACEs, et al.
