Transforming academia through crowdsourcing and gritty determination
Kelly Ramirez-Donders is a soil microbial ecologist who is interested in characterizing the diversity and biogeographical patterns of soil microbes across the globe-including-Bacteria, Archaea, fungi and other eukaryotes. She is interested in global synthesis and networks, and prior to her current position at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) was the Executive Director of the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative and a postdoctoral scholar at Colorado State University.
She is one of the founders of the global grassroots non-profit organization 500 Women Scientists, whose mission is to serve society by making science open, inclusive, and accessible. Public engagement and accessibility are at the core of that mission, and Dr. Ramirez-Donders has worked to build and lead an organization that ensures that science is accessible and shared with communities where it can have the largest impact. Dr. Ramirez-Donders’ public engagement with science fits into three broad categories: (1) collaboration, (2) diversity and inclusion, and (3) science outreach.
