Transfiguration

The celebrated Jasper Quartet — hailed as “expressively assured and beautifully balanced” (Gramophone) — takes center stage in Chiarina’s season opener that draws on poems and legends. Reinaldo Moya’s Yara, inspired by the myth of Venezuela’s most powerful female deity, enlivens vibrant string quartet writing with musical imagery and folk allusions, and Mozart’s mature string quartet famously elevates the cello to a melodic role. Schoenberg’s storied string sextet Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), based on the poem of the same name, tells an otherworldly story of love and redemption through the lush, expressive musical language of turn-of-the-century Vienna.
