Summary:

In the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing, two major hurdles often stand in the way of practical and scalable quantum technologies: ubiquitous quantum noise and the intensive resource requirements of quantum circuit design. In this seminar, I will share some of our recent work to tackle these challenges, paving the way for more efficient and reliable quantum computing systems.

The first part of the talk will focus on the significant challenge of crosstalk, a major error source in various quantum technologies. I will introduce a novel staggered dynamical decoupling (DD) protocol specifically tailored for multi-qubit quantum systems. This method effectively mitigates decoherence errors and two major types of crosstalk, improving the reliability of quantum computation. Shifting gears to circuit optimization, we delve into a circuit optimization technique called quantum circuit resizing, built based on the Berkeley Quantum Synthesis Toolkit (BQSKit) compiler framework. I will introduce two resizing algorithms: one that exploits circuit gate dependencies and another that harnesses numerical instantiation and synthesis. Both algorithms utilize mid-circuit measurements and resets, enabling the reduction of the qubit count of quantum circuits and optimization of quantum resources.

Siyuan Niu is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory working on the computer science side of quantum computing. She received her PhD in microelectronics department from the University of Montpellier. Her research interests focus on quantum circuit compilation, optimization, and quantum error mitigation.
