Indiana Landmarks revitalizes communities, strengthens connections to our diverse heritage, and saves meaningful places. With nine offices located throughout the state, Indiana Landmarks helps people rescue endangered landmarks and restore historic neighborhoods and downtowns. People who join Indiana Landmarks receive its bimonthly magazine,Indiana Preservation. Indiana Landmarks, a nonprofit organization known for saving buildings and for showing them off, needs more tour guide volunteers, called docents. Our tours having been selling out and running wait lists. To accommodate more people, we really need more volunteer guides.
Would you enjoy this type of volunteer gig? You’d get to know Indianapolis in a deeper way and show it off to visitors. You’d inspire curiosity, a love of history, preservation, and learning in the next generation. If this sounds appealing, come on December 7 to learn more about being an Indiana Landmarks docent.
The recruitment event on Thursday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to noon is free and will introduce the variety of docent opportunities, from walking and bike tours for adults and downtown tours for school children to city overview tours via motorcoach and single building tours like the popular Coca-Cola pre-restoration tour last summer.
At the recruiting session, you’ll hear about the opportunities, training, and benefits Indiana Landmarks provides to docents, and take a tour of Indiana Landmarks Center led by current docents. Refreshments will be served at the event, held in our restored and repurposed nineteenth-century church at 1201 Central Avenue in Indianapolis.
Indiana Landmarks saves vintage buildings, revitalizes neighborhoods and small towns, and reconnects people and communities to their heritage through historic places.
