Crow Island School, completed in 1940, is arguably the most important Modern elementary school in the United States. Crow Island School's innovative design was the product of a collaboration between progressive educators Wolsey Washburn and Frances Pressler; and architects Perkins, Wheeler and Will; Eliel Saarinen; and Eero Saarinen. The school also features whimsical tiles by Lilian Swann and textiles by Loja Saarinen. Its revolutionary classroom design provided interior flexibility and exterior courtyards.
With its modern materials, low scale, connection to the outdoors, and attention to a child's perspective, Crow Island School redefined how elementary schools should function and eventually led to more than 500 school commissions for its architects. Crow Island School received the Twenty-Five Year Award in 1971 from the AIA. The school was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2008.
The tour will be led by a team of Crow Island School docents, including writer and historian Laurie Petersen, editor of the AIA Guide to Chicago.
Getting there: Crow Island School is easily accessible by car and is located approximately 35 minutes north of downtown Chicago. The school is located approximately one mile from the Metra Winnetka stop (Union Pacific North line).
