The Teaching Mathematical Thinking (TMT) course fulfills the 3 credit MTI course requirement for Idaho teachers.
This professional development course examines the development of an understanding of student-centered mathematics instruction in the context of Idaho standards for teaching and learning, with an emphasis on grades K-2.
After completing the course, participants will know and be able to:
1. Vertical Progression: Understand the progression of the central understandings of K-12 mathematics.
2. Student Mathematical Practices: Learn about standards for students’ engagement in mathematical practices in part by engaging as a learner in mathematics investigations.
3. Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices: Become familiar with the Idaho Mathematics Instructional Framework for student-centered teaching practices.
4. Content Standards: Develop an understanding of the major strands of mathematics content in grades K-2 such as the early numeracy concepts, place value, whole number operations, iterating, partitioning and equality.
5. Models & Strategies: Models & Strategies: Understand strategies and mathematical models of grades K-2 such as concrete, visual and symbolic representations of area, linear and discrete models.
COURSE FEE: There is a mandatory $150 fee associated with the TMT course. It provides course materials and three (3) Continuing Education credits. You will pay that fee the FIRST day of class.
