Description

We invite you and your adopted child/children or their siblings to participate in a concurrent workshop for parents and children ages 7 to 11.

Did you know nearly every adopted child is asked questions about their adoption at some point? Does your child know how to handle their friends, peers and adults’ comments and questions about adoption? Empower your children!

This program gives children and parents specific tools; and the power to choose if, when and how to cope with questions and comments about adoption that are intrusive and may make them feel uncomfortable.

For children in transracial or transcultural families, questions and comments may begin as early as age 3 (“Why don’t you look like your mom?” or “That can’t be your dad.”) For others, it may begin at ages 6, 7, 8, when friends and classmates begin to be curious about adoption (“Why were you adopted?” or “Where are your real parents?”). Tweens grapple with deeper questions about their identity and can be troubled when asked personal questions about their adoption. Learn some strategies and tools to deal effectively with difficult adoption-related situations; and a common language to use in communicating about these issues within your family.

The facilitators of this empowering workshop will be:

  • Parent Program – Joni Mantell, LCSW, Director IAC Center
  • Children’s Program – Lauren Jacob, LSW, Children and Teen Group Counselor

One of the tools developed by C.A.S.E. to empower kids to handle comments and questions about adoption is the W.I.S.E.Up! program. W.I.S.E.Up!

About the organizer

Organized by
IAC Center

Many of our clients seek counseling and psycho-education to help them cope with the emotional, social and practical issues related to their infertility treatment, failed infertility treatment cycle, miscarriage or pregnancy loss. Others come to us to discuss family alternatives including additional infertility treatments, donor options, adoption, surrogacy or the child-free family. Wherever you are in your process, we’ll help you consider the short-term, long-term, emotional and relationship factors associated with each choice.
