Frequently asked questions

What kinds of programs are these?

All of our programs are nature based and take place somewhere in the park. Each one focuses on a different aspect of nature found here in Deception Pass. Whether it's a certain kind of plant, animal, or ecosystem, we bring it alive in the form of games, activities, and hands-on learning.

What age group is this best for?

Our programs are designed for 2–5-year-olds to participate with their adults. Programs include age-appropriate stories, crafts, and activities to support cognitive development. Older siblings are welcome to attend.

Where are programs located in the park?

Every two weeks, there is a new location for the program. Location details are included in your confirmation email.

How is the program structured and what will I miss if I am running late?

We understand how difficult it can be to get little ones out the door. From 9:30 to 10:00am, we have table stations with parent-led activities. You have the flexibility to arrive anytime in the first half hour without missing the learning component of the program, which starts at 10:00am.

Are Friday and Saturday the same program?

Yes, they are. The same program is offered twice every two weeks to allow flexibility for families when signing up.

Are programs ever canceled due to weather?

Family in Nature programs are offered outdoors, rain or shine. Programs are canceled if it is deemed unsafe based on high winds or significant snow. You will be contacted as soon as possible if we must cancel.

When can I sign up for each program?

We open up the tickets on the 1st and 15th of every month to keep things consistent. This gives you about two weeks before the event to sign up. Please note, Friday and Saturday are the same program.

What is the cost to participate?

Nothing! This program is provided by Deception Pass State Park in partnership with the Deception Pass Park Foundation and Fidalgo Nature School and is completely free. However, a ticket is needed to secure a spot in the program. Discover Pass required for vehicle access.

Do I need a Discover Pass?

Yes, a Discover Pass is required to park at Deception Pass State Park. If purchasing a Discover Pass is a barrier that would prevent you from participating, please indicate this when you reserve your ticket.
