Birding at the Northwest Branch

Overview

Join us with the Springsong Museum for a walk along the Northwest Branch, one of Rachel Carson's favorite places.

As the first hints of autumn begin to touch the landscape, join DC Bird Alliance for a naturalist-paced bird walk along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, beginning at the future home of Springsong Museum - a new museum in development dedicated to connecting community to nature through the wonder and wisdom of Rachel Carson. This guided walk will bring participants to Carson’s former neighborhood to experience the quiet beauty and bird inhabitants of the Northwest Branch and discover how careful observation can deepen our understanding and awe of the natural world.

Location : 10701 Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20901 - please note GPS may take you to the dam side of the road - make sure to park on the Trader Joe's / Starbucks side at the Northwest Branch Trail Access. GPS coordinates, 39.0304, -77.0043

Difficulty/accessibility: there are steep inclines, uneven ground, and some rock scrambles. Sturdy shoes are recommended and some may bring hiking poles. It is about a one mile loop, starting up the Copperhead Run Trail and back down the Fall Line Trail.
