Threading the Elements Workshop with Jonathan Ojekunle

Join teaching artist Jonathan Ojekunle for a hands-on, two-hour workshop that transforms everyday recycled materials into vibrant, layered paper gardens. Presented on Governors Island by Pioneer Works in partnership with Red Hook Art Project at Nolan House 11, this family-friendly class invites participants of all ages and experience levels to explore collage, texture, and sustainable artmaking.

Inspired by lush botanical landscapes, participants will create their own imaginative garden or forest scene using reclaimed paper, cardboard, yarn, thread, and fabric scraps. Through simple cutting, layering, and collage techniques, you'll learn how to build depth, movement, and rich surface textures while giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded.

Working with a colorful palette of recycled papers and natural fibers, you'll experiment with composition, contrast, and dimension to create a unique artwork that celebrates both creativity and environmental stewardship.

Whether you're an experienced maker or trying collage for the first time, you'll leave with an original mixed-media artwork and new ideas for creating beautiful art from reused materials.

Jonathan Ojekunle is a Brooklyn, NY based artist who specializes in portraits. He was born and raised in Oyo state, Nigeria to a father who was an artist and a mother who is a teacher. Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife Nigeria. He recently completed his Masters of Fine Art, with a concentration in sculpture, at CUNY Brooklyn College, Brooklyn NY. Over the years, Jonathan has worked on various commissions for individuals, government and professionals. Moving to America was a transformational experience for him. His new portraits are an effort to understand how he sees himself and in a new environment.
