ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Fiber Art in the 21st Century has greatly evolved in the Artist Community - “It ain’t just your Gramma’s needlepoint!” Today, Fiber Art is defined as “… a style of fine art which uses textiles such as fabric, yarn, and natural and synthetic fibers,” according to Victoria McConnell, President of the Board of Directors of the Fiber Art Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES). Examples of Fiber Art techniques include weaving, knitting, crocheting, quilting, fabric collage, lace- making, tapestry, macrame, tatting, embroidery, basketry, felting, applique, braiding and rug-making. When creating a work of fiber art, each artist uses their distinct talent with forms, texture, design and color to show a connection with and a respect for their past, honor to the present and an eye to the future of fiber art.
For the show THREADED, we have curated works by the following artists: Jessica Walton (corded mask-maker), Donna Stufft, Gyleen Fitzgerald (quilters), Karen Heppen, Gay Lynn Price (weavers), Rachel Myers (Mundillo lace-maker), Wendy Carballo (tatter), Damon Smith (basketry), and Donna Conneally (felter). These artists employ innovative approaches in the use of their fibers, threads and fabrics, communicating to the audience a love of their medium. Each artist centers attention on their art with a PRESENCE in the moment of creativity. The PACE and FLOW of their PROCESS meets with their intent as they manipulate their fibers and fabrics. The PASSION they use in their creative process combines with a playful attitude: “There are no mistakes that cannot be undone…only happy accidents.”
The exhibition will also feature antique, 19th century quilts from a private family collection and unique tapestries from the Warped Weavers Guild, who are celebrating 50 years in Harford County.
