Those Who Talk Back Workshop

Located in Philadelphia’s burgeoning Chinatown North neighborhood,Asian Arts Initiativeadvances racial equity and understanding, activates artists, youth, and their communities through creative practice and dialogue grounded in the diverse Asian American experience. The organization was founded in 1993 as a response to community concerns about growing racial tension between African American and Asian American communities and grew out of a program at the Painted Bride Art Center, which was Philadelphia’s first-ever Asian American Arts Festival: Live Traditions/Contemporary Issues. Today, our work remains rooted in this initial concern and programming is centered around building community and gaining greater cross-cultural understanding through the arts.

Those Who Talk Back: Protest Banner Lending Library and U.S. Citizenship Test Sampler Aram Han Sifuentes February 2 - April 6, 2018 Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday, 10am - 6pm
<A HREF="http://www.aramhan.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Aram Han Sifuentes</A>’ Those Who Talk Back invites all to enter her interactive library, which houses the Protest Banner Lending Library, and U.S. Citizenship Test Samplers. In these works, fabric protest banners and samplers become a stand in for citizens, non-citizens, immigrants, the disenfranchised, and for those looking to voice their dissent and discontent, and hopes and aspirations for our world. For the duration of the exhibition, gallery visitors are free to check out and return protest banners.
