What did a co-operative ever do for me?
Did you know, that all of the employees of Suma, a co-operative in Halifax, all earn the same £40k salary? Suma is a worker’s co-op and interprets co-operation to involve an equal distribution of wages amongst workers. In Sheffield we have many different versions of Co-ops (see co-op directory), including most recently, the newly launched Creative Guild. Not all of our local co-ops share the same interpretation of co-operation as Suma, but all of them share a commitment to co-operation as a fundamental principle.
In celebration of National Co-operative Fortnight we are holding June’s TSC at the lovely home of Sheffield’s enterprising trading co-operative, Re-gather. Regather is one of many inspiring examples of Co-ops in Sheffield. It hosts many ventures at its base, the re-furbished Regather Works in central Sheffield, including a packed programme of events, a veg box scheme, a café, social action projects and a brewery.
We’ll be joined by seasoned co-op’er Gareth Roberts from Regather, who’ll be able to share with us some of Regather’s story and something of what’s involved when an organisation sets out to operative ‘co-operatively’.
Join us for lunch
After the café we hope you’ll stay on for lunch (12 til 1 pm) at the café at Regather Works which is run by the really inspiring Real Junk Food project. The menu and cost depends on what is available that day … but its sure to be delicious and lunch is normally under £5. So please do consider staying for lunch to support the project - and also join us for our first Third Sector Cafe 'social'!
