About this event

  • 3 hours

Social Media can be a confusing landscape for therapists to navigate, but familiarity with the online spaces provides opportunities for therapists to better understand and relate to their clients. As TikTok rises in popularity among a variety of demographics, so too do anxieties about its impact on developing minds. This presentation seeks to demystify the platform, with topics ranging from TikTok basics, like its “for you” page, to how users are creating content to fight the stigma of mental illness, to the hazards of misused therapy speak.

Participants will be able to:

  • Become familiar with TikTok’s basic layout, history, and prevalence with various demographics.
  • Increase their awareness of TikTok’s mental health communities and the consequences of their content, such as misrepresented diagnoses and weaponized therapy speak.
  • Be able to identify benefits to some TikTok content and approach the topic of clients including TikTok as a part of their therapeutic journey with curiosity and nuance.
