About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Each week we will read accounts by professional writers about the ways they use journaling to develop a distinctive voice, collect observations, play with language, dive into obsessions, and test out new ideas.

Weekly writing assignments will encourage the establishment of a daily journaling practice using a variety of prompts and approaches.

Tuition: $150, which includes a copy of the required course textbook,Writers and Their Notebooks, edited by Diana M. Raab. You can pick up your book in the store or have it mailed to you.

Otherwise, all you need is a notebook of your choice, a few pens and pencils that you love, and a little bit of time (15-30 minutes) every day (or most days).

This course will be taught by Freda Love Smith. Freda is a writer, teacher, and retired indie rock drummer. Her recent memoir, I Quit Everything explores addiction, intoxication, and the twilight of her musical career. Her first book, Red Velvet Underground, documents a year of cooking lessons with her son and reminisces about drumming with bands such as Blake Babies, Mysteries of Life, Some Girls, and Sunshine Boys. She teaches at Northwestern University, Lesley University, and Bookends University, reviews nonfiction for Booklist, and has published fiction and nonfiction in Dame Magazine, Lit Hub, Smokelong Quarterly, The North American Review, and Paste Magazine.
