Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides an introduction to the Tuscan Type. Participants will learn how to draw the Tuscan Order according to a methodology based on that of Vignola.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To introduce the terminology of the classical language as it relates to the Tuscan Order.

  • To introduce a columnar proportioning system as a means for drawing the Tuscan Order in which proportions

    and individual components are expressed in terms of modules or units of measure based on column diameter.

  • To draw the Tuscan Order using a methodology based on the Vignola system.

  • To provide a foundational knowledge of essential column part dispositions and relationships on which to build

    broader knowledge of the orders and other classical elements.

  • To compare the Vignola Tuscan to other normative versions of the type.

  • To look at applied examples of the Tuscan type in historic and contemporary architecture.

  • Students will be able to understand the principle of intercolumniation, or column spacing, and when it is appropriate to use type of one column spacing over another.

  • Students will be able to identify the comparative Tuscan orders developed by Palladio and Gibbs.
