The Three-Fold Good is a foundational concept in Camaldolese spirituality. Its rediscovery in the early 20 th century and subsequent addition to the Camaldolese Constitutions marked a sea change in the self-understanding of our congregation.
Also known as the Triplex Bonum, it consists of the three Benedictine values of Community, Solitude and Evangelization all held together inexquisite, dynamic balance.
It has been part of our history since the beginning of the order, and can serve as a unique and helpful paradigm for living out our values in the world, and organizing
our daily lives.
These core Benedictine values, when held together in balance provide a
stabilizing, psychological framework for not only interacting with others, but in supporting our
interior and exterior lives.
The Three-Fold Good, taken together with the traditional Benedictine motto of Ora et Labora,
“Pray and Work,” and the three Benedictine vows of Stability, Obedience, and Conversion of
Life, provide a full understanding of of what it means to be human, giving dignity to all aspects
of the human quest for meaning and social connectedness. The Three-Fold Good is the worthy
subject of daily meditation.
