Why is it called 'The Third Space'?

The term "third space" refers to places beyond home (first space) and work or school (second space). These are informal gathering spots where community, creativity, and real connection all flourish. Our book club embodies exactly that: a space where you can be fully yourself and explore new ideas.

Who can join?

Everyone! The Third Space welcomes readers of all backgrounds, ages (18+), and reading levels. Whether you're a casual reader, academic scholar, or somewhere in between, you'll find your place here.

Do I need to be an experienced reader or have a literature background?

Absolutely not. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to engage with the book. We welcome first-time book club attendees and create an atmosphere where all insights (whether analytical or personal) are valued.

How long are the meetings?

Meetings typically run 1.5 to 2 hours, including discussion time and optional mingling both before and after. You're welcome to arrive early or stay late to chat!

Are meetings in-person, virtual, or hybrid?

We offer hybrid meetings. You can attend in person here at Boston  or join via Zoom. Link will be provided upon registration.

Do I have to attend every meeting?

Of course not. We understand life gets busy.  Attend when you can. However, regular attendance helps build community and enriches discussions, so we encourage consistency when possible.

What genres do you read?

We read widely. Expect fiction, memoir, essay collections, poetry, and occasionally graphic novels or narrative nonfiction. Our selections prioritize literary quality, cultural relevance, and books that spark meaningful conversation.

How are books selected?

Books are chosen through a combination of:

Member suggestions and voting
Thematic focus for specific months/seasons
Curator selections highlighting diverse voices and perspectives
Special author events or community reads

We aim for a varied selection across genres, time periods, and perspectives.

What if I don't finish the book in time?

Come anyway! You don't need to finish to participate. Many great insights come from discussing what you did read, and hearing others' perspectives often enhances your own understanding. We do ask that attendees be mindful of major spoilers for those still reading.

Where can I get the books?

Books can be purchased or borrowed from: Your local library (often available as physical books, ebooks or audiobooks), Local independent bookstores,Online retailers (Amazon, Bookshop.org, etc),Used bookstores or book swaps. We hope to partner with local bookstores at some point for discounted copies

Absolutely! However you consume the book (print, ebook, or audiobook) is perfectly fine.

Do I need to register in advance?

Yes, please register through Eventbrite for each meeting you plan to attend. This helps us: 1) Plan for appropriate space/seating, 2) Send reminders and any last-minute updates, 3)Share discussion guides or supplementary materials, 4)Build our community roster

Yes! Friends are welcome, but please have them register separately through Eventbrite so we have an accurate headcount.

What's the cancellation policy?

Life happens! If you can't make it, simply update your RSVP or let us know. If we need to cancel or reschedule, registered attendees will be notified via email at least 24 hours in advance when possible.

The Third Space is built on mutual respect and intellectual generosity. We ask all members to:
1) Listen actively and respectfully, even when you disagree 2) Share space. Ensure everyone who wants to speak has opportunity 3) Engage with curiosity, not judgment              (Part II below)
