The Spring Landscape en Plein Air (oils) w/Michelle Chrisman

Outdoor landscape painting requires a strong foundation in the principles of plein air painting used by the french impressionists. The plein air painting method incorporates the use of large simplified shapes, correct color values, strong light / shadow pattern, color temperature shifts, and hard & soft edges. In this outdoor workshop, students will paint several small studies and two medium paintings per day. Learn how to approach painting in a direct and decisive manner with a fresh approach.

*There will be a scheduled break in halfway through the session

Location:

Please note this workshop will not take place on Harwood campus. Saturday morning meet up will take place at Tiguex Park (1800 Mountain Rd).

Materials (what to bring):

PAINT LIST: Basic Limited Palette Colors (required): White; Cadmium Yellow Medium; Cadmium Orange; Alizarin Crimson; Ultramarine Blue; Thalo Green. Indian Yellow by Gamblin.

• Optional Colors for “Full Palette Theory & Colorist/Light Approach: Brilliant Yellow Light (by Richeson); Brilliant Yellow Pale (by Williamsburg); Alizarin Yellow & Alizarin Orange (by Williamsburg); Transparent Orange & Indian Yellow (by Gamblin); Cadmium Lemon; Cadmium Red Light; Permanent Magenta; Permanent Rose; Brilliant Pink; Quinacridone Violet & Rose;

Cobalt Violet Light; Cerulean Blue; Sevres Blue (by Rembrandt); Shiva Yellow Citron (by Richeson).

• Gamblin Galkid Gel in tube- for immediate quick dry under-painting. Res-n-gel for paint consistency, extension of paint & impasto (comes in tube) by Weber (very important).
• Palette- French Easel or paint box on tripod w/ a plastic box palette w/1/8th”glass inside that seals & keeps paint fresh (Suggested: French Easel by Mabef (Italian) with a Richeson wood Palette, painted white on bottom with glass cut to fit inside). Paper Palettes are OK also. Glass is best for oil painting, and easy to scrape with flat razor scraper.
• Gamsol Turpentine & Painter’s Can with screen enclosed for pigments to fall to bottom or metal cup. Roll of Viva paper towel and small trash bags.
• Paint boards - Bring 2- small panels, 6x8 or 5x7 in addition to your choice of larger panel sizes: 9x12, 11x14, 12x16. Gessoed boards or canvas panels are fine. Stretched canvas lets light through which distracts.
• Brushes: “Brights or Flats.” Bring only 3 new brushes. Since sizes vary per brand, be sure 1 brush is 1 inch wide, one is 1⁄2 inch wide, and one is 1/4th inch wide- clean, new brushes only.
• Palette Knife- (IMPORTANT)- #11 “Plus” from Italy with a tapered rounded end.
• Painting Gloves- (suggested: purple non-latex gloves from Walgreens or Ace Hardware).
• View Finder (at art store) or order online: “Viewcatcher.”
• Wet Painting Boxes or Pizza Boxes to carry your beautiful wet paintings home!
• Small Sketchbook & Pen & 3 mid-gray markers (30% gray, 60% & 80% grays) for small value studies & note taking. (IMPORTANT).
• Black Sharpie pen. UMBRELLA to attach to your easel or to secure into the ground for shade (like the“ShadeBuddy” umbrella that goes into the ground)

About the Teaching Artist:

Michelle Chrisman has been making her living as a full-time oil painter and instructor for over 25 years. She is a Plein Air Painter of the New Mexico landscape, a contemporary figure painter and a still-life painter. Michelle’s work is represented by The Signature Galleries in Santa Fe, NM & Scottsdale, AZ, in Taos by Wilder Nightingale Fine Art, Weems Gallery & Romero Street Gallery in Albuquerque. Michelle is a Contemporary Colorist/Expressionist oil painter grounded in the Principals of Impressionism - how light works in the natural world.
