The Space Between Two Fest

Over the past 3 years, we (Mirian Calvo & Hanan Makki) have been conducted PhD research projects at the Glasgow School of Art using co-design as a way to bring people together from different backgrounds and levels of expertise, to engage in dialogues in order to enact transformative agency and integrate those voices in the creative process of our research outcomes/findings. Both research projects are design processes that support social innovations, which are part of Social Design – design motivated by social demands and not by the market – that fosters social change towards sustainability and wellbeing.
After our first collaborative showcase in <A HREF="%20http://radar.gsa.ac.uk/4969" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">'Whereabouts you are' </A> 2016, we are advancing our research outcomes/findings in an installation called 'The Space Between Two', which is part of a collective art exhibition called Last Futures, 17th – 25th March 2018. It considers collaboration as the thread connecting our two distinct practices – one analysing community-based co-design processes in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland; another one presenting an outcome (video-game) of research focused on applying video-games to assist autistic children with auditory hyper-sensitivity in the improvement of their everyday life.
Now we are holding an event the 24th of March at Tramway, an international art-spa​ce in Glasgow, to establish a dialogue between our research and the public. We bring together people to encourage a collective reflection on the use of co-design approaches as formulas to rethink the present and reshape the future through democratisation of the design process. You are welcome to sign up. All tickets are free but places are limited so please book online to reserve a place.
 
<H2>The event comprises two parts:</H2>
1. Activating Engagement (14.00-15.00)
This session will focus on an app game called 'Sinbad and the Magic Cure', the design outcome of Makki's recently finalised PhD, which aims to assist autistic children to communicate with their surroundings. The session will include hands-on exploration of audio and visual aspects that might enhance the co-development of this game. Attendees will have a chance to discuss their own engagement work with us.
 
2. Reflecting together and deeper (15.00-16.00) 
 This session focusses on a community-based co-design project called 'Tools for Renewal', a close-knit collaboration between Calvo's PhD and <A HREF="http://newboldtrust.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Newbold Trust</A> – a social enterprise committed to sustainability in the North East of Scotland. With the help of Victor Morales, the director manager of Newbold Trust, we will present the process of this project in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Attendees will get a sense of co-design processes and the use of some methods to engage deeper with communities. In the session you will have the chance to discuss and reflect upon the use of design as a vehicle to strengthen communities.

<H2>Organisers:</H2>
Mirian Calvo is a PhD candidate and teaching-assistant at the School of Innovation, The Glasgow School of Art. Her PhD research project aims to identify and visualise the participants’ learning processes in community-based co-design projects. Her research interests include: visualisation of informal-mutual learning processes of the participants involved in community co-design projects; development of methodologies to ignite self-awareness about informal learning; the role of art and design as means to evoke reflection and collective action towards social change. 
Hanan Makki is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Glasgow, she has successfully completed her PhD at the Simulation and visualisation of the Glasgow School of Art. Her research has explored the use of Serious Games to desensitise autistic children with auditory hypersensitivity. As outcomes, she has developed a methodological and technical framework inspired on software engineering and graphical design practice to produce a platform game based on the legend of Sinbad.
