About this event

  • 3 days 23 hours

Join this inclusive and explorative space for sharing the many styles and forms of the Alexander Technique, and for furthering our collective skill in presenting the Work to the world through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices. Read our mission and invitation to being together in brave space: Inviting All to Collaborate in Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Belonging.

AT Liberation Project and Alexander Alliance International join together to host this non-hierarchical gathering for all those interested in sharing experiences, ongoing questions, and most effective teaching tools and strategies in support of making the Work more accessible in today’s world.

Each session will focus around a central theme or question, chosen by the attendees. We will work together, in one space, to share our most effective material, forms, and teaching practices, as well as exploring new strategies for addressing issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity within the Work and how it is expressed in the world. Together, we will create new material and paradigms which we can take back to share with our local AT communities.

As we gather - with open-mindedness, creativity, curiosity, skill, and heart - who knows what might happen?

We might:

  • learn how to do something differently
  • experience very different styles, and starting learning how to do them
  • expand our ideas of what the Work looks and feels like
  • find new vocabulary
  • learn from the experience of other teachers
  • learn how students/teachers new to the Work understand it in today’s culture
  • notice habitual ways of understanding the principles, and make new choices
  • re-define what the Work is about for each of us
  • learn skills for taking the Work into new communities
  • learn some practical tools for making our practice more DEI-informed
  • make new friends and connect to the AT community in a new way
  • be inspired to transform our own practices
  • fall in love with the Work (all over again)

We invite you to be a part of this alternative, non-hierarchical way of gathering as a community. Come help us create this new experience. There are discount rates for international travelers, trainees, recent grads and even your students! Recent grads is approximately 1-5 years after finishing training, but could be for anyone struggling to get their practice going.

Many details are answered in the Frequently Asked Questions below. Further information about our values and mission statement can be found on the ATLP website and on the Alliance websites.

Expanding Your Tool Box

Friday August 9 & Saturday August 10, 10 - 7 Santa Fe, NM
Location: The Vineyard Church

This 2 day intensive offers the essential technical skills needed for contemporary-style teaching through activities, situations, and groups, taught by CAS Director Robyn Avalon and the CAS faculty.

Robyn teaches this highly experiential intensive throughout the US and Europe to Alexander Teachers and Trainees who want to learn the Art of Group Teaching and the technical skills for teaching through activities and situations. This course is usually offered over 3 weekends, but Event Participants will have a unique opportunity to learn the fundamental skills and pedagogical structures, to take home and practice. It's the perfect compliment to the Sharing Lab experience, as participants will receive individual technical coaching to support their new skills and ideas.

See a more detailed description below, and feel free to contact Robyn for more details: robyn@contemporaryalexander.com / 5056702596.

Frequently asked questions

Is it open to everyone?

Yes, the Sharing Lab is open to everyone interested exploring together. This includes trainees and teachers from all lineages, students of the Work, somatic practitioners from other modalities, and all those interested in the intersection of DEI and somatic practices.

What about food and housing?

The Event does not include food and housing - you are responsible for your own arrangements. Santa Fe has many housing options, including hostels, motels, BNBs, and hotels, at every price range.

Are there recommended housing options?

One very popular affordable option is the Santa Fe International Hostel (https://www.hostelsantafe.org), which is in walking distance to the venue. Another midrange option is the Sage Inn (www.thesagesf.com), also in walking distance.

Where do I fly into?

There is a large airport in Albuquerque (ABQ) which is served by many US airlines. From there you can take a shuttle van (groometransportation.com), or take a taxi to the RailRunner Train (www.riometro.org). There is also a small airport in Santa Fe. Renting a car is an excellent option!

What's included in the tuition?

The Sharing Lab tuition covers the times we meet together - Sunday 8/4 at 3pm through Thursday 8/8 2pm. The Teacher's Toolbox tuition covers class meetings Friday 8/9 & Saturday 8/10. Tuition does not include extra-curricular events. Travel expenses such as flights & transportation are not included

What should I bring?

Santa Fe is at 7000 feet - bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen), water bottle, and layers, as the temps can fluctuate throughout the day. Decent walking shoes, a swimsuit, and something to wear to the opera (anything from formal to funky) might be useful too.

Local Food

Every local meal comes with the question: "red, green, or Xmas?"- which refers to which type of local hatch chili you want on your food. Either version can be hot or mild on any given day, so ask your server. If you're not sure, order it on the side - the chili can be hot!

Is there any Communal Housing?

We are happy to put you in touch with other participants if you are interested in sharing a local house rental. There are many good options nearby.

Do I need a car?

If you stay within walking distance of our venue, probably not, but it is definitely easier to enjoy the Santa Fe experience with a car. If you're interested in connecting with others to share a car, let us know.

What about the Santa Fe Opera?

It is a totally unique experience, as an open air theater, nestled in the rolling hills outside SF. We will go together at least one night, as a group (optional, of course), to experience the pre-show tailgate and world renowned experience.

What about Meow Wolf?

If you haven't heard about this unique interactive art experience - be sure to check it out! It's definately something to put on the list for one of the times off.

Is there local camping?

There are a number of places you can camp close to town, especially in Hyde Park. You will need to make reservations early, and will need a car.
