The Shared Decision-Making Bridge

Armadale Health ServiceMount Nasura, WA
Thursday 11 June  •  12:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Overview

A practical communication skills workshop for healthcare professionals.

Welcome to The Shared Decision-Making Bridge!

Do you frequently feel that your patients struggle to understand the complexity of their illness? Do they or their family members expect unrealistic outcomes? Do you wonder if there’s a more efficient way to discuss treatment options?

There is….

Although partnering with patients through a shared decision-making approach is key to delivering clinically appropriate care (ref: NSQHS Standards) we know that at the “coal face”, the practical (communication) skills required were not taught to us in medical school.

Building on EMHS experience - 5 years of teaching over 600 clinicians to communicate Goals of Patient Care - we invite you to participate in a simulation workshop in shared decision-making conversations at Armadale Health Service.

Facilitator: Dr Henrique Nicola - ICU Consultant, SJOG Midland Hospital
Co- facilitation by Dr Ali Hassan - Geriatrician, AHS

What you will learn:

  • Conducting effective shared decision-making/ goals of care conversations
  • Managing uncertainty and patient expectations
  • Recognising and addressing emotions
  • Handling difficult conversations scenarios
  • Reducing misunderstandings and complaints through better communication

This workshop is ideal for medical practitioners looking to improve their communication skills.

This event is supported by MDA National.

This workshop is an independently developed professional education activity focused on evidence-based communication and shared decision-making. The sponsor had no input into workshop content and delivery.
