Opening Celebration:
June 8th from 4-7 PM
After catching the Capital Pride Parade, make your way over to Woolly Mammoth for tasty treats and beats by @wxxds.x!
Experience The Rose Garden: Green Room by John Jarboe in our signature Mobile Art Gallery at 7th and D St NW (In front of Oyamel) @oyameldc, and enjoy activations, including “Rose’s Closet”, sponsored by The DC Center for the LGBTQ+ Community, as well as a cozy writing station where the community is welcome to write letters to their gender.
The Rose Garden: Green Room is a remarkable collaboration presented by CulturalDC, featuring the visionary work of Philadelphia-based trans artist, John Jarboe (she/her). This stunning installation coincides with the theatrical production of Rose: You Are Who You Eat.
Dear You,
Have you ever been told that you ate your twin in the womb?
That’s what my aunt told me when I came out as trans.
It gave me a lot to digest.
My twin’s name would have been Rose, and this exhibition is dedicated to her. Explore, sing along, rest, and relax here for as long as you like.
This is only one piece of The Rose Project, a garden of videos and performances I grew especially for You, my fellow trans folx, queerdos, and genderful ones, and for our guardians and caretakers.
I hope this space feeds and nourishes You or, at the very least, leaves you chewing on some tasty puns.
Love,
John and Rose
The Rose Garden: Green Room is an immersive exhibition inside CulturalDC’s Mobile Art Gallery, a 40-foot shipping container converted into a movable contemporary art space. The Mobile Art Gallery will be transformed by John Jarboe into an interactive space filled with video, music, and sentimental items to connect the visitors to the essence of John’s consumed twin, Rose. The space is intended to inspire connections to ancestry and identity through interaction with video installations, original songs, and multimedia art by Jarboe that evoke memories and reflection. Jarboe’s artistic vision is to empower visitors by allowing a sense of surprise, vulnerability, and communal catharsis through interaction.
The exhibition will be open:
