The Roots of Liberating Structures in Complexity Science and Health

THE LS ORIGIN STORY

Do you know the health care roots in the origin story of Liberating Structures? This session will provide a history and a perspective that’s new to even the most well-versed practitioners. Come learn about the deep relationship between health and the science of complexity. Discover the ways that Liberating Structures drew inspiration from this work

The links between Liberating Structures and complexity science began with the creation of the Plexus Institute (2000) and the publication of Edgeware: Complexity Resources for Health Care Leaders (2001).

To quote Edgeware, "Complexity science reframes our view of many systems which are only partially understood by traditional scientific insights. Systems as apparently diverse as stock markets, human bodies, forest ecosystems, manufacturing businesses, immune systems, termite colonies, and hospitals seem to share some patterns of behavior. These shared patterns of behavior provide insights into sustainability, viability, health, and innovation.

With help from our special guests, we revisit the early scholarship, review a few intoxicating concepts, and tell a story of what we have been learning over the last 25 years.

MEET THE TEAM:

These sessions will be led by a team of experts in group facilitation with a rich background and deep experiences in individual, community, and systemic health care.

Keith McCandless helps people innovate and take on complex challenges by working with groups to unleash creativity, discover opportunities, and create momentum. While co-developing Liberating Structures, he cut across disciplines, tapped into spiritual practices, and deepened scientific insights along the way. Prior to his work on Liberating Structures, Keith led executive learning initiatives for the Health Forum (HF) in San Francisco and founded and served as the executive director of the Foundation for Health Care Quality in Seattle.

S. Fisher Qua has a focus on community health and wellbeing and is very committed to developing participatory approaches to working with complex problems that tap into more of each person’s intelligence, imagination, and creativity.
