About this event

Please note that this is an in-person event and will not be livestreamed.

Please join us for cocktails, new data, conversation, and networking! Award-winning journalist Kavitha Cardoza will moderate a fireside chat with Andrew Brennen (Co-Founder and Board Chair, Kentucky Student Voice Team and NAACP LDF Marshall Motley Scholar at Columbia University), Ana Chan (Secretary for Science and Technology, Government of Guatemala), Maureen Greenwood-Basken (Program Director, Global Children’s Rights, Wellspring Philanthropic Fund), and Nicole Haberland (Education Lead, Population Council). To set the stage, Council researcher Arindam Nandi will share powerful figures from a new analysis of education’s economic, social, and health benefits for societies, individuals, and their children.

Education holds enormous promise for the potential of every child. Yet we continue to see, in the U.S. and around the globe, crushing disparities in educational access and continuation, and pernicious learning poverty. And the promise of education is falling short with persistent inequities and injustice in employment, secondary and higher education, and political participation. We will examine compelling new data on the ripple effects of education and have a critical conversation about what hasn’t been achieved in education and why? Why has the progress that has been made in education not translated into economic and social equity? And what policies and programs are working to eliminate inequity in education and fulfill its potential for justice and opportunity?
