Geographic isolation, scarce resources, and healthcare workforce shortages create formidable barriers to delivering essential medical services. However, pioneering rural regions are boldly tackling these challenges head-on with innovative solutions.

Because this discussion holds particular relevance for our region, Telluride Foundation has invited experts in rural healthcare with unique perspectives to share insights into the obstacles and opportunities in rural care. Our panel will also explore broader state and national efforts striving to address healthcare disparities through creative delivery systems, policy reforms, and technological advancements.

Join our panel discussion to unravel the complexities surrounding rural healthcare delivery and learn from foremost experts on a critical issue impacting countless rural communities.

Meet the Panelists:

Joshua Ewing is the Vice President of Rural Health for the Colorado Hospital Association, serving as a liaison between the state's 100+ hospitals/health systems and policymakers. A certified association executive, he has over 15 years of healthcare policy experience at state and national levels. Ewing is responsible for advancing policies to strengthen Colorado hospitals and the healthcare system, focused on the unique challenges facing rural healthcare ecosystems.

Kaye Hotsenpiller is the CEO of River Valley Family Health Centers, a role she transitioned to in November 2021 after joining as COO in 2018. Previously, she served 24 years at Hilltop Community Resources designing and managing family/youth programs across multiple counties. Hotsenpiller has extensive experience advancing services for underserved populations like the homeless, early childhood, domestic violence survivors. Her nonprofit leadership background positions her to guide River Valley's community health mission.

Jeff Roberts is the Executive Director at Telluride Medical Center. Previously, he led the start-up of The Orthopedic Surgery Center in Denver from construction through welcoming the first patient while fostering an engaged culture. With degrees in business and healthcare management plus extensive experience across primary care, specialty care, and operations, Roberts is poised to guide Telluride Medical Center into an era of community-focused growth.

Marc Cabrera is a Managing Director and Co-Head of Healthcare Investment Banking at Oppenheimer, covering physician services, managed care, and post-acute sectors. Over his 25-year Wall Street career, including prior roles at Morgan Joseph, Bear Stearns, and Smith Barney, Cabrera has closed over 125 transactions valued at approximately $17 billion. He has advised on numerous notable deals in managed care and physician services.

Angelina Salazar (Moderator) is the CEO of Western Healthcare Alliance, establishing strategies and policies to benefit rural healthcare in Colorado and Utah. Since joining in 2016, she advanced to CEO in 2019 after prior healthcare leadership roles. Salazar serves on multiple boards focused on rural health policy and access. Her dedication to solving rural challenges has increased WHA's visibility, impact, and financial stability. She holds degrees in English, psychology, and language acquisition.
