We are excited to welcome ALL new and seasoned poets/poetry lovers! The @illbejacy Poetry Club is known for providing an incomparable experience filled with warmth and amazing energy! Join us in a safe space where just a few hours of fun will leave you with a lifetime of memories basking in good vibes, poetry, community and genuine connections!
Dress Code:
We always enjoy a color themed suggested attire for our poetry events, to easily indentify our community and participants! The coordination shows up beautifully in our photos and it's always a vibe to come together showcasing our individual styles whithin the chosen color! This time we will be rocking Yellow! Feel free to get as creative as you'd like incorporating as much yellow as you want in your outfit or even just a yellow shirt and some jeans will definitely do the trick! 🤩 We are excited to see everyone in their yellow drip! 💛
Open Mic Guidelines:
The first hour of this amazing night will be dedicated to our Open Mic list for Poets who don't want to compete but would like to perform! Each Poet will get the opportunity to share one poem with 3 minutes on the stage!
Guidelines for Slam Poetry Competition:
Evaluation Criteria :
- Delivery & Physical Presence
- Voice & Articulation
- Phraseology
- Originality in subject matter
- Cadence
- Dramatic Appropiateness
- Accuracy
- Overall Performance
Round 1:
15 Poets will have upto three minutes to wow our judges and audience members with their performances.
All rounds and each performance will be evaluated upon the criteria on our judges sheets providing scores ranging from 1-10.
An additional overall score from 1-10 will be added by a chosen audience member.
The chosen audience member must not be affiliated in any way to the slam poet being evaluated.
Only 8 poets will move on to the next round.
Round 2:
8 Poets will have up to four minutes to perform a creative piece that encompasses cadence and delivery within a given message.Only four poets will advance to the final round.
Round 3:
For the final round, 6 Poets will have up to five minutes to slay the stage with an impactful piece and 4 winners will be chosen from 4th leading up to the grand prize winner!!
Golden rule of a Poetry Slam:
The point is not the points! The Point is Poetry!

Win or lose... Be proud of your courage to participate in an outstanding competition dedicated to expressing yourself and inspiring others to do the same!
Rules:
- Each poem must be of the poets own creation
- Each poet gets the designated time plus a five second grace period. If the poet goes over time, (.5) point five will be deducted off their total score for each 5 seconds they go over.
- The Poet may not use props, costumes or pre recorded music but you are allowed to sing, beat box or make any other sounds with your body as part of your performance.
- Memorized poems are not required nor necessary but can impact your score positively.
- The poems may NOT include any hate speech, sexist, racist, homophobic or transphobic comments. However, you are entitled to express emotions of anger or frustration in a creative way without disrespecting others.
Pro Tip: What we value the most when judging will be your ability to connect to your poem. If you can achieve this... you will connect to the audience, the judges and everyone in the room!
Prizes: - 1st place Slam Poet Winner will be awarded $300.00
- 2nd place Slam Poet Winner will be awarded $100.00
- 3rd place Slam Poet Winner will be awarded $50.00
- 4th place Slam Poet Winner will be awarded a special online feature via @illbejacypoetryclub in July.
