The Poetic Gaze: A Two-Day Hybrid Writing Workshop

Day 1 (In-Person at SFMOMA): Saturday, April 12, 2025 11am – 3 PM
Day 2 (Virtual on Zoom): Sunday, April 13, 2025 12 – 4 PM
Sliding Scale: $100–$200 (includes museum admission)

Explore the transformative practice of ekphrastic writing—where visual art becomes a portal into poetry and prose. The Poetic Gaze invites you to enter into a dialogue with art, to sit with what you see and let it shape what you write.

Over the course of two days, we’ll tend to the space between image and imagination, observation and expression.

Day One takes place in person at SFMOMA. You’ll have the option to stay late and explore the galleries after we gather. We will explore the museum togther and separately — each participant will have a guide for reflection, observation note taking, and samples of ekphrastic writing.

Day Two meets online. We’ll revisit our notes, be guided through several writing ekphrastic writing experiements, we will share work and discuss what we have found in the spaces between visual art and writing.

This is a generative workshop for writers at all levels—a space for inquiry, play, and presence.
