ABOUT UPTOWN ARTS STROLL/PASEO DE LAS ARTES
In 2003 the Uptown Arts Stroll/Paseo de las Artes was launched as a day-long program intended to shine a spotlight on the vibrancy and diversity of Upper Manhattan’s artists, cultural organizations, and businesses. Beginning in 2008, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), in collaboration with local artists, businesses, community leaders, and institutions, has led the Uptown Arts Stroll, which today is a month-long festival serving over 60,000 people from West 135th Street to West 220th Street. Each year the Uptown Arts Stroll features open studios, art exhibitions, concerts, literary events, and performances throughout the month of June.
ABOUT NORTHERN MANHATTAN ARTS ALLIANCE (NoMAA)
NoMAA’s story begins in 2006, when the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) recognized Northern Manhattan’s need for a more cohesive cultural community in which artists and arts organizations have the resources and support necessary to maximize their artistic, social, and economic potential. NoMAA obtained its official 501(c)3 status in 2007 and was incubated by the Hispanic Federation until becoming fully independent in 2011. Since that time, NoMAA’s mission is to facilitate the creation of new works by both emerging/established artists, strengthen the infrastructures of local arts organizations, and encourage public engagement/dialogues around issues affecting upper Manhattan’s cultural community, fostering the region’s economic development and overall vibrancy.
