Music and Theatre at UAH partner to provide pre-professional training for students persuing the performing arts. Since 2007, the collaborative works of these two unique and excellent partners has delighted North Alabama and garnered awards and national recognition for musicals and operas produced at UAH.

The Medium is a short (one-hour-long) two-act dramatic <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">opera</A> with words and music by <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gian_Carlo_Menotti" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gian Carlo Menotti</A>. Commissioned by <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_University" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Columbia University</A>, its first performance was there on 8 May 1946. The opera's first professional production was presented on a double bill with Menotti's <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Telephone,_or_L%27Amour_%C3%A0_trois" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Telephone</A> at the Heckscher Theater, New York City, February 18–20, 1947 by the <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet_Society" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ballet Society</A>. The <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_theatre" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Broadway</A> production took place on May 1, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theater with the same cast.
Madame Flora, with the help of her daughter Monica and Toby, a mute servant, tries to cheat her clients through faked seances. She is touched herself by a hand during one of them, an occurrence she cannot explain and which drives her to insanity and murder.
