The Stanford Chinese Faculty & Family Club (SCFFC) is pleased to announce that our Quarterly Speaker Series for the Winter Quarter will feature Professor Lexing Ying, Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, on artificial intelligence and machine learning.  You, your family, and your friends are cordially invited.  The discussion should be highly stimulating and educational.  We hope that you will join us. What:  Talk by Professor Lexing Ying, entitled "The Mathematics Behind Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning".  There has been tremendous development in the past several years in AI and ML, most notably the successes from deep neural networks. In this talk, Professor Ying will discuss three examples. In each case, he will show how a simple and beautiful mathematical idea plays a key role in a modern AI/ML algorithm in a language that is understandable to the layman. Professor Ying is a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University since 2012.  He was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin from 2006 to 2012.  His research focuses on computational mathematics. He received his Ph.D. from New York University and was a postdoctoral scholar at California Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2006. He is a recipient of the Sloan Research Fellowship (2007), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2009), the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing (2011), the James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing from SIAM (2013), and the Silver Morningside Medal in Applied Mathematics (2016).
