The San Diego Law Library, in partnership with the San Diego City Library, presents a showing of the Emmy Award winning documentary The Loving Story. The free screening will take place at the San Diego Central Library - Neil Morgan Auditorium.
The Loving Story is a 2012 documentary about Richard and Mildred Loving, parties to the landmark 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which legalized interracial marriage. The couple married in 1958, at a time when anti-miscegenation laws were held up in 16 states. After the state of Virginia declared their marriage to be illegal, the American Civil Liberties Union helped bring their case to court. The film takes us behind the scenes to witness the legal challenges and emotional turmoil faced by the families and attorneys to the case.
The film screening is part of Law Day 2017. This year's theme is on the 14th Amendment, which advanced the rights of all Americans through the Citizenship, Due Process, and Equal Protection clauses.
Professor Bryan H. Wildenthal will lead off the event with an explanation of the laws in effect at the time and how this case forever changed American law and society.
