About this event

While Frederick Douglass is historically associated with the Eastern Shore, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and areas of New England, we advance that Frederick Douglass must be properly recognized for his associations, connections and visits to areas of Appalachian Maryland. In order to present a more complete and inclusive historical narrative of Frederick Douglass than what is promoted, marketed and taught within the state, we must acknowledge Douglass in Appalachia Maryland.

The several visits of Frederick Douglass to areas of Western Maryland were not isolated jaunts but important illustrative examples of the political and community activism Douglass sustained following the Civil War throughout Maryland.

Presentation will discuss Frederick Douglass and local railroads, local education networks, local churches, Emancipation Day celebrations, grand hotels, his involvement within Maryland's 6th Congressional District and more. Learn more about Douglass and his connections to Governor Lloyd Lowndes, U.S. Senator Louis E. McComas, Dr. Lewis Henry Steiner, John Robert Clifford, the Peck family, Bishop Wayman, Rev. Pennington and others.
