Call and Response Collective (CRC) presents The Last Tree—where environmental and social justice activism is performed through interdisciplinary dance theater at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook in Culver City, Los Angeles on May 4, 2025. Our project explores decolonization through dance theater that begins as a show and then transforms into an open mic where the audience can respond to prompts based on liberation that will be highlighted in the theater work.
The dance theater piece tells the story of the last tree in a community. Representations of our human essence battle over whether they should cut down the tree for shelter/firewood or allow the last tree to propagate more trees. This story talks about death and life through mechanisms of grief and gratitude that oppose each other and unknowingly converge.
The Last Tree highlights societal oppressions that are intertwined with the climate catastrophe. We aim to interview many communities of South LA to bring real people’s stories intertwined with the creative narrative composed in the musical score. Together as a collective, we wish to educate, entertain, and spiritually liberate the LA community at large through spoken word and dance.
