Over the course of 4 decades and countless memorable live shows, The Jayhawks have soared to heights few ever achieve while winning the hearts and minds of numerous critics, fans and peers in the process. Since 2014 The Jayhawks have enjoyed a career resurgence, touring constantly and releasing 3 memorable albums – including Paging Mr. Proust, a true classic co-produced by Peter Buck – while collaborating with the likes of Ray Davies and Wesley Stace. In early 2025 the band announced the that work had begun on their 12th studio album, slated to come out in 2026, which will be the 40th anniversary of the release of their first album. 2026 has officially been designated as “The Year Of The Hawk.”
THE SKY CHIEFS
The Sky Chiefs are what happens when two veteran singer/songwriters, Stephen McCarthy and Kevin Pittman, accidentally create something too good to stay lost forever. Stephen has spent decades playing with alt country pioneers The Long Ryders and occasionally tours and records with the iconic Americana group The Jayhawks. Kevin spent time recording in LA and has released 2 acclaimed solo albums in recent years.
So in the early 1990s, the pair holed up in a 100-year-old bungalow that doubled as a recording studio, songwriting lab and late-night speakeasy. Over the course of a year, they cranked out two dozen songs full of blood harmony, vintage country twang, lap steel and Telecasters loud enough to wake the departed. Then, life happened. The record got shelved, the tapes vanished, and decades passed. The album was lost until last year when the original recordings magically resurfaced in a friend’s sweltering attic. Here are 14 songs from those sessions, heard for the first time since being recorded decades ago.
“The Everly Brothers, back in 1993-9, should have relied on this team for their new songs. The words and music are rich, catchy and creative… consistently” -Americana Highways
“It’s quite possibly the best country rock album of the year, whether the year is 1999 or 2026” -Style Weekly
“Beatles like vocals…If you are a big country, music, fan, or like a bit of twang, then you will find it an absolute treat. Makes you wonder why on earth the album was shelved in the first place” 9/10 -Americana UK
