About this event

The Intelligence (Stripped Down) / Alice Sandahl (Video Premiere) / Reveries – Concert + Book Launch!

Please join us for a special book launch for the new the Intelligence lyric book “Now, Squirm!” with an accompanying art exhibition. The Intelligence will be performing an intimate acoustic/electronic set joined by Alice Sandahl (formerly of La Luz) who’ll be premiering a new music video.

“Lars Finberg’s long running concern continues to defy expectation and the trappings of genre with nine squirming, dialed back but furious avant pop songs. Now, Squirm! could quite possibly be as heralded in the future as the Screamers or the Art Bears are now.” Mike McGonigal - Maggot Brain Magazine

Bio – The Intelligence:

With inspirational templates as far-flung as LES PAUL & MARY FORD, THE SPECIALS, LEE PERRY and THE SPITS, Lil’ Peril pulls off the absurd shift “from ‘No-Wave SANTANA’ to ‘SCREAMERS recorded by JON BRION’”. Playing shoulder parrot to studio engineers has no doubt informed Finberg’s approach to home recording, specifically in how much further he can go without wincing budget-minded eyes staring him down. This is immediately sensed on the opener “Maudlin Agency,” which begins with canned minimal bleep and closes with a full recreation of the “Brass Monkey” hook (Saxophone throughout by Mikal Cronin). These surprise-attack conclusions are a running current throughout the Lil’ Peril’s program and demonstrates that the main lesson Finberg has learned in The Intelligence is to never reel it in. Centerpiece banger “My Work Here Is Dumb” ranks among the finest Intelligence moments existent and an apex in Finberg’s songcraft, boasting a bonkers arrangement and a thematic gnaw that is both brutal and playful. The collection closes with the epic “Soundguys,” a suite cut-up that fuses CAN and STEELY DAN into one of the most dastardly tunes available for consumption in the plague age. As Finberg himself states, “They may say this is ‘lo-fi’, but I say it’s ‘no-CGI’”.

Bio - Alice Sandahl:

Though Los Angeles based artist Alice Sandahl isn’t an unknown element within independent music, her solo work is distinct from her work as a keyboardist and vocalist with rock band La Luz. On solo debut Bright and Blue, Alice Sandahl (La Luz) excavates with unvarnished vulnerability themes of loss, grief, and hope for the future with keyboard-driven music that combines pop, jazz, and the Great American songbook—Nina Simone meeting Harry Nilsson in a smoky bar anywhere in the world.

This is the world she returns to in her live performances, giving us a peek into her internal sonic world.

Bio - Reveries:

"Like an Ayahuasca session conducted by Mitch Hedberg" - Vulture

Who are those guys? Poets or something? I always see them around coffeeshops…no laptops…weird…are they artists? Philosophers?…They seem like they must be around 40…

“REVERIES” is the collected memoirs of two mysterious drifters, presented live as a back-and-forth telling of surreal stories, bizarre one-liners, and off-kilter observations of a strange world. Anthony Oberbeck and Matt Barats as the stoic nomads are accompanied by ambient music and abstract video montages in a show that is part stand-up, part psychedelic coffeeshop Happening.

Anthony Oberbeck was a recurring guest star on "Shrill", starred in and co-wrote the indie feature "Dad and Step-Dad", starred in the special "Whenever" for Adult Swim and played supporting roles in indie features "Inspector Ike" and "The Civil Dead".

Matt Barats has been seen in "Search Party", "High Maintenance", "The Last O.G." and the HBO miniseries "The White House Plumbers". He wrote/directed/starred in the indie feature "Cash Cow" which premiered at Slamdance 2023, and starred in the indie feature "Inspector Ike". He was featured as a New Face at the Just For Laughs comedy festival.
