The Inner Loop is a literary community open to writers of all levels in and around Washington, DC. We turn the solitary act of writing into a shared experience by offering free programming for writers of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Join us for one of our lively monthly reading series events, tune into our podcast, or sign up for one of our writer’s retreats.

We're back from our summer hiatus and can't wait to see you all again! Join us at Shaw's Tavern on August 19th at 7:00 pm for an incredible reading featuring Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson reading alongside nine local writers in fiction, nonficiton, and poetry, including our Summer Residents! Whether you're a bookworm, an inspiring writer, or just enjoy listening to stories, The Inner Loop readings have something for everyone. Our mission is to create an inclusive writing community in DC, so we encourage you to grab some food, a drink, and meet other literature lovers. We can't wait to see you there! A former National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow, Dickinson’s work has earned recognition in anthologies such as The Best American Essays and been awarded Maryland’s prestigious Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize for literature. Her new book, <a href="https://www.eedickinson.com/books" title="https://www.eedickinson.com/books" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Claire McCardell: The Designer Who Set Women Free</a>, has been called “an essential read” and is the riveting hidden history of the most influential fashion designer you’ve never heard of. Learn more about our summer residency:We partner with Woodlawn &amp; Pope-Leighey House and Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture to invite writers to a historical site to explore place, ownership, and history to bring awareness to critical social and environmental issues we face today. The 2025 Summer Residency cohort includes Matti Ben-Lev, Violeta Bermudez, Shannon Jeffries, Lani Furbank, and Emily Haynes. We will also hear Indigo Eriksen and Rhonda Zimlich reading fiction, and Phil Wexler and Suzanne Zweizig reading poetry.
