About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours
    • Gabriel Willow works with NYC Audubon & has been featured in the NY Times
    • Walk through the park while Gabriel points out its thriving natural nightlife
    • Learn how to identify and track nocturnal creatures

Balmy summer evenings are a beautiful time to stroll at night, but a closer look reveals a secret side of wildlife in the city that appears after dark. As the city lights meet the stars, bats, cicadas, katydids, fireflies and migratory birds emerge from their slumbers, giving new meaning to “the city that never sleeps”!

Join Gabriel on a starlit stroll through Central Park. He’ll teach you how to find and identify bats using a special echolocation-listening device and will point out numerous other natural wonders along the way, bringing you a safe distance to all the diverse creatures of the city night. End the excursion at the boathouse, where you can discuss your findings over a nightcap.

Gabriel Willow has been a lover of nature his whole life. Raised in rural Maine, he followed his passion for wild places and wildlife - particularly birds - to Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Vermont and southern Mexico, and earned a degree in ecology. In 2003, he found nature in the least likely of places: New York City.

He’s been here ever since, working with the Prospect Park Audubon Center, NYC Audubon, the Bryant Park Corporation, Wave Hill, Lincoln Center, and other organizations and cultural institutions, helping fellow New Yorkers experience the same incredible thrill of discovering interesting wildlife in the midst of the city. His winter harbor ecology tours were called "The Best Thing About Winter in NYC" by Time Out New York , and his self-designed eco-cruises and nature tours have been written up in The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and more.
