Ed Damiano, Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Ed Damiano's work focuses on creating and integrating blood-glucose control technologies with a vision of building a bihormonal (insulin and glucagon) bionic pancreas.

CITIES

Katherine Lusk, Executive Director, Initiative on Cities

Executive director of an urban leadership and policy research center at Boston University co-founded by former Boston Mayor Tom Menino. The Initiative operates as both a convener and catalyst, generating and supporting original urban scholarship across the University, spearheading the Menino Survey of Mayors and convening multi-stakeholder conferences and seminars on pressing urban issues.

THE GIG ECONOMY

Lou Gaglini, Executive Director, Center for Career Development

Lou joined the Center for Career Development in 2017 after extensive experience in higher education career services as well as leadership roles in human resources and recruiting in the private sector. At Boston University, Lou is responsible for leading the office and overseeing the mission, vision, and strategies of the Center. He remains very active in the business community and has served in leadership roles within several professional associations. Lou holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University and a Master in Public Administration from Northeastern University. In his spare time, Lou is a dog lover and a fan of trivia, politics, and the Boston sports scene. In the fall, Lou enjoys officiating local high school and youth football.

STEM CELLS

George Murphy, Associate Professor of Medicine

George J. Murphy is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Boston University School of Medicine. He also co-directs the Boston University Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM). Having been recruited to Boston University as an independent researcher in 2010, Dr. Murphy now heads a laboratory composed of dynamic and passionate young researchers who utilize stem cell biology and regenerative medicine to combat blood-borne disease.

POLICY IMPACT

Noora Lori, Assistant Professor of International Relations

Noora Lori is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy of International and Area Studies. She was selected as an Institute Research Fellow in January 2017. Her research focuses on the politics of citizenship and forced migration in the Middle East. She founded and co-directs the Pardee Initiative on Forced Migration and Human Trafficking (FMHT) and is the Associate Director of the Boston Consortium for Arab Region Studies. Lori won the Gitner Family Prize for Faculty excellence (2015) and the Templeton Award for Excellence in Student Advising (2016). Her research has been funded by the Initiative of Cities at Boston University, the ACLS/Mellon Foundation, and the ZEIT-Stiftung “Settling into Motion” Fellowship.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Zoran Tiganj, Scientific Research, Center for Memory and Brain

Zoran wants to understand the brain by building it. His research interests are in the fields of cognitive and computational neuroscience and artificial intelligence. He uses mathematical models and computer simulations inspired by cognitive and neural data to construct and test hypotheses on how neural dynamics gives rise to cognitive processes. He's currently trying to integrate computational models of perception, memory, learning and higher cognition into a unified cognitive and cognitively inspired AI framework.
