The Firemen's Ball / High-Brow/Low-Brow/Uni-Brow
A milestone of the Czech New Wave, Milos Forman’s first color film The Firemen’s Ball is both a dazzling comedy and a provocative satire!
dir: Milos Forman - 1967 - 1 hr `17 min
July 4th may be this week but High-Brow/Low-Brow/Uni-Brow is inviting everyone to a ball...THE FIREMEN'S BALL!
A milestone of the Czech New Wave, Miloš Forman’s (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, AMADEUS) first color film is both a dazzling comedy, and slice-of-life hangout, and a provocative political satire. It's a hilarious saga of good intentions confounded when a local fire chief announces his retirement, the firemen of a provincal Czech town decide to throw an elegant gala in his honor The result: CHAOS—from a beauty pageant whose reluctant participants embarrass the organizers to a lottery from which nearly all the prizes are pilfered and everthing in betwween.
Presumed to be a commentary on the floundering Czech leadership, the film was “banned forever” in Czechoslovakia following the Russian invasion and prompted Forman’s move to America.
High-Brow/Low-Brow/Uni-Brow is a monthly film series programmed by Andrew Linn dedicated to exploring films from every corner of taste and seeing what they have to say with each other.
