So here's the story: A little while back, we decided to do a 3-week virtual jam for Explorable Explanations. Then somebody said "What if we did an in-person kickoff hackathon event in San Francisco to get the ball rolling on this cool jam thing?"

And thus, the Explorables Jam Kickoff Hackathon was born. During the weekend of July 28th we will all gather to hang out, work on cool interactive explanations of stuff, hold talks and workshops, and generally be groovy.

We will start at 10am Saturday, get situated, and have lunch at noon. Then we work until 7pm when we huddle up for dinner and socializing. After that you can either go home for the night or work overnight at the office. Then we gather at 8am Sunday for breakfast, and work continues until we break again for lunch at noon. Hacking continues until closing ceremonies at 4pm, when we will hopefully have some cool projects to show!

One more thing: We are running this thing on donations, so if you'd like to contribute we have a GoFundMe for that. Whatever you can offer, we really appreciate it!

What the heck is an Explorable?

So glad you asked. An Explorable Explanation is anything that explains an idea through play. To build them, we use a combination of text, images, videos, and most importantly interactive doohickeys. Click here for more information and examples!

Will there be food? I am hungry.

We are providing Lunch/Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast/Lunch on Sunday, plus snacks and beverages inbetween. However, we are running this thing on donations so we encourage you to bring food—especially food to share!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Nope, this event is open to everyone.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The FOSSA office is a short walk from the Civic Center BART/Muni stop. There is probably parking somewhere nearby... but it's San Francisco, so parkers beware.

What can I bring into the event?

Enthusiasm, computers, food, water, a sense of humor/wonder/curiosity, pants.
