PART 2: “Why Can’t You Just Go Back Masking?” The Mental Health Implications of Faking “Normal"

Presented by Amy Laurent, PhD, OTR/L & Jacquelyn Fede, PhD

When: 5/12/22, 5-7pm (PST)

View disclosures, agenda, CEU information »

Masking is broadly defined as any effort to suppress our different traits, behaviors and actions in order to appear more like neurotypical peers. This presentation blends current research findings with the autistic speaker’s personal experience to explore what it means to mask and ways to identify masking as well as associated mental health outcomes that stem from blending in to pass as “normal.”

Tisi (/vi/, they/she) and Asiatu Lawoyin (/ˌɑsɨˈɑtu/, they/them)

When: 5/14/22, 10-11am PST (12-1pm CST, 1-2 EST)

FREE suggested donation for API $10

View disclosures, agenda, CEU information »

V. Tisi (/vi/, they/she) and Asiatu Lawoyin (/asɨ'atu/, they/them) discussed the intersections of anti-Blackness, anti-Asianness, and autistiphobia, and how behaviorist ideologies promote assimilation that oppresses our communities. Justice perspectives go beyond diversity, equity, inclusion, and must include the analysis of systemic oppression, how it implicates identity-erasure, and centers on whiteness and neuronormativity.

Please Note: Captioning and ASL will be available during the event.

Topics include: understanding neurodiversity as a paradigm and as a movement, how to seek out Autistic voices to provide client-centered care, gender dynamics and autism, the harms of promoting Autistic masking, and the importance of fostering your clients’ Autistic identities by (1) reinforcing their autonomy, (2) helping them self-advocate, and (3) using a strengths-based approach.
