Course Description

This training will cover the basics of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), often called e-cigarettes or vapes. We will address the current landscape of ENDS use, including use among youth and young adults and former smokers. We will discuss the federal actions taken to regulate ENDS and the available research regarding the harms of ENDS use and their use for nicotine replacement therapy. We will also cover the limited evidence-based guidelines for treatment for individuals who use ENDS.

Who Should Attend

This training is designed for administrative and clinical staff of Alameda County Public Health Department-contracted provider organizations and Alameda County Behavioral Health (ACBH)-contracted substance use treatment and mental health programs​.

Instructor Information

Prior to joining LifeLong Medical Care, Sophia Artis worked in health policy consulting as a research associate and project manager, focusing primarily on federal and foundation clients. She has also worked in COVID-19 response and quality assurance at the San Francisco and California Departments of Public Health. Sophia came to tobacco control through her undergraduate thesis on the youth vaping epidemic and is interested in improving access to whole person care and integrated behavioral health treatment, including treatment for tobacco use disorder.

Educational Goals

  1. Describe the general components of ENDS and the general differences between ENDS and cigarettes
  2. Describe the current knowledge base regarding the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes as Nicotine Replacement therapy
  3. Describe the current landscape of federal regulation regarding ENDS
  4. Name FDA-approved forms of nicotine replacement therapy
