Join us for this tour focusing on the stories of individual Black barbers in Charlottesville in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Visit the locations of their barbershops in Downtown Charlottesville and learn about the barbers’ pivotal roles in both Black and White society. The tour will explore the influence of Black barbers during the Jim Crow-era and their involvement in events surrounding the Civil Rights movement.
The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society and the Friends of Charlottesville Downtown have teamed up to explore the “Door to Door” history of Downtown Charlottesville. From this partnership we are developing a multifaceted strategy to better showcase and promote little known stories from the earliest beginnings of Downtown to the recent past. The latest product of our partnership is two new evocative walking tours which focus on past downtown businesses, the people who ran them, and how they shaped the heart of our city and the wider community.
Tour will begin at the corner of 3rd St. NE on the Downtown Mall near Chaps Ice Cream.
