The Belle of Amherst is a one-woman play written by William Luce about the life of 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson . It takes place in her home in Amherst, MA, where she was well-known as a baker and caregiver of family members, but unknown as a poet, since during her lifetime she kept most of her poems in a suitcase under her bed.I n the play, Emily tells of her poetry, largely concerning nature, love, death and immortality.
In our version of the play, actress sally Southall recreates Emily's life in the Amherst Virginia Glebe, an historic home in rural Virginia. The play is directed by William Kershner. AGAR first produced the play in 2013 directed by Bonnie Sue Stein and starring Ms. Southall.
