Description: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a source of pride and great accomplishments. Although their primary mission was to educate and nurture Black students initially when they were not allowed entry into typically white universities, they have now become the epicenter of Black culture. This online lecture will provide an overview of HBCUs; their contribution to society and the current need today. The highlight of this lecture will be the Black artist and their work since emancipation. Much of these pieces are housed at the galleries on the campuses of HBCUs. Artists included in this presentation includes Romare Bearden, Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Henry Ossawa Tanner and many more. HBCUs not only house the works of fine artists, they also have a wealth of artifacts and memorabilia.

Study Tour for HBCUs: Art and Culture
Date: June 6, 2024 Limited Space, Registration deadline 6/1/24
Description: Leaving from Raleigh at 7:30am traveling to visit Winston-Salem State University’s Diggs Gallery, followed by a delicious lunch curated by Sweet Potatoes, a Black owned restaurant. We will then go on to North Carolina A&T University; to experience the H. Clinton Taylor Collection and the Mattye Reed African Heritage Collection in Greensboro. Next, we will go to the North Carolina Central University Art Museum. All galleries will provide a docent led exhibit. We will finish up with a wine tasting and charcuterie at Melanated Wines, a Black owned wine store, for an opportunity to reflect on the day’s events before returning to Raleigh at about 7:30pm.
